Ani-Magic 2003 Con Report

Ahhh, Ani-Magic, basically cosplay camp. I never went to camp, but I'm assuming this is what it's like. :D

I had an absolute blast this year, I got to see a lot of friends, hang out and costume.

Some of my absolute highlights were the performance of the Hizashigumi. "Kiseki no Kane" is one of my all time favorite Sakura Taisen songs and it gave me shivers to be able to watch it performed in person!

USA Musume can take the blame for my car-mates chanting "Naisu Body Body Body!" on the trip home. :P Seriously, though, another amazing performance by a talented group of cosplayers.

And of course, our Sakura Taisen group! Sure it was scheduled to be at the same time as the massive Final Fantasy gathering, but who cares! Our Shonen Red/Sakura Taisen group can kick the Final Fantasy group any day! ;-)

Thanks so much to everyone there, ajmeow as Evil Underling #1 (Sumire), honeychan as Andre from Ai Yuen (Maria), tartetatin as Goriki The Bear Killer (Kanna), tristencitrine as The Red Wind of the Mediterranean (Orihime) and of course our photographers dmk26 and Tristen's husband, Joshua.

I had *such* a good time doing that gathering, you have no idea!

Ok on with the boring bits. :)

Thursday:
So yah... the usual pre-convention cram. I had decided to try and finish my new Ohgami battle uniform for the con, but ahh, I didn't finish in time. So I went ahead and packed my old version. It's still wearable, but just really hot and it's a little too big. :/

Because of the last minute costume craming, I only had about 3 hours of sleep for the 6 hour drive ahead. 8-/ Surprisingly I was feeling good. Me and positivespace and ajmeow were all panicing at the end. Haha, misery loves company.

tartetatin came over via BART and watched me panic as I packed. I think I'm getting better at packing. I have a check list of stuff to bring as I threw everything in small suitcases and bags. shinbios had the Suitcase of Doom™ and I needed to pack accordingly. :) Surprisingly I didn't forget one costume piece!

Headed over the AJ's place and meet up with her, Dez and Positivespace so that we could hit the road.

The majority of the trip was pretty uneventful. Dez and AJ were great at keeping me company and awake for the drive. Positivespace and Moo were in the other car. The only issues we had were during the last leg of the trip to Lancaster, we had to drive through this god-forsaken desert. It was pitch-black and the only light came from the car. 8-/ I was *not* happy. It's ok in the day, but at night I was just afraid I was gonna hit something. I'm so happy to hear that Ani-Magic is moving to new digs next year.

We finally get to the hotel and you cannot believe what happened! karisu_sama and didjiman's room was right next to ours! And guess who was to our left? It was lionboogy! We couldn't have had better neighbors!

Friday:
First day of the con, weee! Got acquainted with everyone there. I costumed as Squall (Final Fantasy VIII) for a while. But, it being a desert, that didn't last too long. :) Later slipped into my Zack (Dead or Alive) but the Extreme Beach Volleyball version. :) The DOAX group was basically a bust, but that was ok, I was enjoying the cosplay panel that was being held at the pool area. DOA at Ani-Magic is cursed for some reason. :) Last year's DOA gathering also didn't happen. I did find some DOA cosplayers later on. They were sorry to have missed the gathering, and even knew of my Zack costume! :D

You know the community is getting really small when you know 90% of the panelists on the cosplay panel. :) G-Chan, Tristien, Tiffany and Ashley (From Ah! My Cosplay/USA Musume) and an Erica Fontaine cosplayer were on the panel. :)

After dinner, we we all changed costumes again to watch the Cosplay Revue, which basically had cosplayers perform something and wear a costume from the same series. I changed into Ohgami (Sakura Taisen/Sakura Wars).

Again, the highlight (as if I didn't gush enough about it) was the hosts, the Hizashigumi performed songs from the Sakura Taisen musicals. What can I say but... wow!

After the review, we had a big ST gathering. I knew we were gonna have a gathering, but I didn't know we were gonna be pulled on stage. 8-O The wall of photographers was... yah... 8-O I was pretty blind for the remainder of the night. %-O

Of course, because of the sparklies and ass-fluffies of doom of the Hizashigumi Revue dresses, I'm actually considering doing a musical version of Ohgami's battle uniform... yes, I'm quite, quite insane...

Got to meet the members of the Hizashigumi for the first time. Well officially anyway. :) I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy! :D

Night time at Ani-Magic... well what can I say? Not much actually not without embarrassing a whole butt-load of people. :)

::goes and encrypts his blackmail file::

Saturday:
Our first cosplay group of the day was our Shonen Red gathering! Yay! I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. It's not just because it's ST related, but because it's just so *random*! The characters only show up in a couple of OVA episodes and the ST musicals.

From what I've heard, no one knew who the hell we were. :) I know Moo got a lot of "What the hells" for her Bear Killer costume. :) Weee, the pictures are so so so very cool as were everyone there! ::happy happy::

After our Shonen Red group was the big honking Cosplay.com Group Photo. Holy cow! These gatherings get bigger and bigger every time.

The funny thing is that for this gathering, the DJs turned off the the music and essentially the entire con stopped. There was no activity happening during this shoot. :) I think the rest of the hotel was deserted. :>

At this rate, Ani-Magic should just be called Cosplay.com Con. :D

You can see half of my face on the picture that was posted. Hehe.

I had been asked by Divinehype Productions to be interviewed for their cosplay documentary, so I headed to that. It was very cool! I've never been interviewed for cosplay before. :) Mostly, basic questions, what I get out of cosplay, what do I do in my normal life, what costume was I wearing. Unfortunately for that one, it was a long winded answer, since I was wearing Shonen Red and had to explain Sakura Taisen, and that the characters in the anime, puts on plays, and that's what I'm costuming from one of the plays.

I think the only thing I would have liked to do is say "um" less before every question. I caught myself, but a lot of them slipped through. Hopefully they can find something useful from all of my babbling. :)

Rhianne said that she's send me a copy of the documentary sometime in December. I hope it turns out well! She's going to be submitting it to film festivals and even Comic Con next year.

Got back to our room to hang out a bit and figure out dinner. ajmeow and shinbios changed into their Candidate for Goddess/Pilot Candidate costumes.

Hahah, it was really funny since in that show, all the guys get the really skimpy costumes and the girls are fully dressed. So essentially Dez is running around with his butt exposed. :D It was funny, at one point he was standing in front of Maryssa as she was sitting on the bed. Her eye level was... yah... as she she almost grabbed his ass. :D Come on! The back of his tunic actually has a panel exposed just for that purpose. :)

We went to grab (hahah) dinner, and surprisingly Dez wanted to go through the drive though. Hehe...

The masquerade was next con event that was happening. aimeekitty was asked to be craftsmanship judge. Yay! :) The show was actually very cool. They had started injecting little skits such as the black mages from Final Fantasy X goofing around on stage and stuff like that. It added a nice break between skits.

For the finale, USA Musume closed the festivities by performing "Love Machine." What a fantastic way to end the show with such a high energy performance!

Congratulations to all the winners! Including positivespace for winning Best in Show - Novice Class! Woohoo! You gals were awesome! I told you the skit would be funny as hell. :D Now just don't let it get to your head. ;-)

As the judges were deliberating, I went backstage to get pictures and talk to everyone.

didjiman had set up a lit backdrop for all of the masquerade participants and for anyone to use! It was so cool! He even got a few pictures of me, but man. He had set up a double flash for the backdrop and after a few pictures I was pretty blind. 8-O

Yay! More hanging out during the night. Finally got to see shonen_star, kitkat_nap, delsorin and company together at the con. More hanging out and planning more costumes for the future. This hobby isn't addictive really... I can stop any time I want...

<b>Sunday:</b>
Massive packing to do. :) My stuff is everywhere, but I wanted to hit the USA Masume panel, followed by Tristian's anime musicals panel which just enough time to pack... yah... that's it. :)

The panels were great! Hell, I went to more panels here then I did at AX. :)

Went back to the hotel to pack up everything into the car. We had to check out by 1pm, but I had promised to wear Squall so me and <lj user="shonen_star"> can get pictures together! Her Edea is soooo very cool. :) We got some great pictures, though it's always me kneeling or getting straggled or something like that. I get no respect I tell ya. ;-)

::sigh:: Alas we had to get going. Decided to get food before our long trip home. This turned into a pretty big production since it was all of us, the <lj user="karisu_sama"> clan and Shonen Star, her brother and Kenny joined us.

Hehe, hell this lunch turned into a mini-convention on it's own. We basically invaded the Marie Callender's. :D

Ahhh, what can I say, Ani-Magic was a fantastic experience once again. I'm looking forward to next year, in their new larger digs. We lose the window decorating contest, but hopefully it won't be in the middle of nowhere. :)

It was great seeing everyone!
